Meet the Team

James:
James is usually our team mule and handyman.  After moving to Ottawa in 2000 he began his "outdoor" career - mountain biking, paddling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and adventure racing.  Over the past 10 years he has competed in many international expedition races, such as Ecomotion Brazil, XPD Australia, Adidas Terrex Sting in Stirling (Scotland), APEX (Switzerland)  Wenger Patagonia Expedition Race, Raid The North Extreme (Canada), Odyssey Endorphin Fix (USA), and Untamed New England (USA). James is a 2x champ of the Mad Trapper 10km snowshoe race series (2007 & 2008), 2x winner of the E2C 24 hour rogaine, finshed 4th in the Ultimate XC 3-day challenge (2011) and 5th in 58km UXC ultra-marathon (2013), as well as winning the Summer Solstice 24hr MTB race duo male category with Harper. Other accomplishments include the Transrockies Challenge, Pittsfield Snowshoe Marathon, Ultimate XC, and Canadian Ski Marathon.

Nathalie:

Nathalie is a Canadian who lived in France for over 15 years and in Australia for 5 years. She studied in Ecology at the University of Montpellier and was playing badminton and climbed a little bit at the time. She started doing some triathlons in 2008-2009 when she moved to Australia. Very quickly she realized that she was not a sprinter and that longer the distances suited her much better. She started paddling and got introduced to adventure racing in late 2009. In 2010 she was participating in her first expedition race and has been addicted ever since. Her strengths in adventure racing are pushing through the long legs of races when the terrain isn't too technical as well as the paddling.
Jason:
Jason, awesome navigator and adventure racer, lives in Mendon, NY resident married to Kelly for 21 years with two children, Tyler (19) and Sara (17).  Works for GM as a Sr. Product Engineer at the Lexington Ave facility in Rochester, NY.He Graduated from Churchville-Chili High School in ’87 as a two-sport athlete competing in cross-country and outdoor track.  He Graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in ’92 with a degree in Engineering and as a three-sport athlete in cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track.  3x NCAA National qualifier in cross country, once in outdoor track (3000m steeplechase). After a ten-year career racing cars post-college transitioned to triathlons briefly then onto Adventure Racing in 2003.

My name is Todd Nowack and while Canadian, I currently live in Canberra, Australia. I've been active my entire life moving from track and field to more adventurous pursuits such as mountain biking, trail running, kayaking, and climbing. After finding the sport of orienteering, I entered my first adventure race in 2005 and was instantly hooked! From there, I competed numerous events from sprint to expedition length with many successes in teams and as a solo racer such as being the 11x overall champion of the Mind Over Mountain Adventure race; however, numerous bad breaks in the longer events have prevented me from have a solid finish. While I am strong in many disciplines, my hope is that my orienteering skills that I will be bringing to Team Canada AR will help in bringing the team closer to the front and having a clean and strong race at the Adventure Racing World Championships (which are being held in Shoalhaven, AU which is close to where I currently live!). I've been out of the racing scene since moving to Australia, but have kept up my fitness so am currently getting my compass dusted off and legs on the ground to put in the time to push at the ARWC!. I'm excited to be part of the team and am really looking forward to racing again. I also need to work on my French! :)

Pete:

Pete is another great navigator. He's part of the ‘old guard’ of adventure racing, having been involved in the sport since 1998.  From organizing over 30 races across Canada to participating in multi-day events in all sorts of landscapes across the world, including two World Championships, Pete says that adventure racing has defined a significant part of his life.  He even met his wife through the sport!  "Our current team is one which I really enjoy racing with...translation = they put up with my navigation bobbles, carry my gear when I’m spent, keep me awake when it has been too long between rest stops, and are great company for discovering remote wilderness with a few laughs."

Harper:

Harper is usually our navigator and captain of the team. He started racing in endurance sports about 10 years ago with adventure racing, then onto mountain bike racing, triathlons, orienteering and basically any outdoor endurance sport... but AR is still his favorite and primary sport. Past races have included multi-day adventure races such as Ecomotion Brazil, Adidas Terrex Sting in Stirling (Scotland), APEX (Switzerland) Wenger Patagonia Expedition Race, Raid The North Extreme (Canada), Odyssey Endorphin Fix (USA), Untamed New England (USA), Transmarocaine, Extreme Adventure Hidalgo (Mexico), and Neuvo Leone (Mexico); Individually he's had success at 24 hour mtb solo racing: winning the Summer Solstice and Lifestyles of Rich & Famous races; Other accomplishments include Hellgate 100K ultramarathon; Ironman Canada + Ironman Lake Placid; XTERRA World Champs; Transrockies Challenge.
